Pulling Back the Curtain on Medical Weight Loss

What GLP-1 and Tirzepatide Actually Do, Why They’re Safe, and Why Quality Matters More Than Price

If there’s one topic I’ve had more conversations about in the last two years than any other, it’s medical weight loss. And I get it. The before-and-after stories are everywhere. Friends are talking. Coworkers are whispering. Someone in your life has lost a noticeable amount of weight and they’re being a little mysterious about how.

Here’s what I’ve noticed: most people walk into our health spa for the first time with two big feelings tangled up together — hope and skepticism. They’re hopeful because they’ve struggled for a long time and they’ve heard these medications can really help. They’re skeptical because the internet has made the whole topic feel confusing, intimidating, and a little bit scary.

So today I want to do what we always try to do at Fortitude: pull back the curtain. No hype, no pressure, no fluff. Just the honest answers to the questions people ask me every single week.

First, the basics: what are GLP-1 and Tirzepatide?

These are two of the biggest breakthroughs in metabolic medicine in decades. Both are medications you take by injection (we’ll get to how that works in a minute), and both work with your body’s own hormones — not against them — to help regulate hunger, fullness, and how your body processes food.

GLP-1 medications

GLP-1 is short for glucagon-like peptide-1. It’s a hormone your body already makes naturally. Every time you eat, your gut releases GLP-1, which sends a signal to your brain that says, “We’re full. We can stop now.” It also slows down how quickly your stomach empties, so you stay satisfied longer.

For a lot of people, this signal is quieter than it should be. They eat, and the “I’m full” message either takes too long to arrive or never arrives loud enough. GLP-1 medications amplify that natural signal. Suddenly, the body is doing what it was always supposed to do — telling you you’ve had enough.

Tirzepatide

Tirzepatide is the newer kid on the block, and it’s a beautiful piece of medicine. Instead of working with one hormone like GLP-1, it works with two: GLP-1 and GIP (glucose- dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). That second hormone helps your body manage insulin and energy more efficiently. Tirzepatide is the most expensive of the medications

we offer at Fortitude. Studies have shown that for many patients, this dual-hormone approach produces stronger, more consistent results.

In our practice, Tirzepatide has become our biggest seller for a reason — the people who use it tell us it works.

Why these medications are considered safe

This is the question I love getting because the answer is genuinely reassuring.

First, both GLP-1 and Tirzepatide have been studied extensively in clinical trials involving thousands of patients. They were originally developed and approved for managing Type 2 diabetes — meaning they’ve been used safely in patient populations who often have multiple health conditions, for years, before they were ever used for weight loss.

Second, the way they work is fundamentally different from old-school weight loss drugs. They don’t speed up your metabolism. They don’t make your heart race. They don’t suppress your appetite by hijacking your nervous system. They simply enhance signals your body is already sending. That’s why so many people describe the experience as “finally feeling normal around food” rather than feeling drugged.

Third — and this is the part that matters most — they’re prescribed and managed by an actual medical team. At Fortitude Health Spa, that means Dr. Dennis Ortiz, our Medical Director with over thirty years of surgical and medical experience, oversees every weight loss client. We monitor how you’re responding. We adjust dosing. We answer questions when something feels off. You are not on your own.

Like any medication, these can have side effects — nausea, mild stomach upset, and changes in appetite are the most common, especially in the first couple of weeks as your body adjusts. Most people find that these settle down quickly. We walk you through exactly what to expect, what’s normal, and what to call us about. Nothing is left to chance.

What to actually expect on the journey

Here’s the part nobody on social media tells you, so I’m going to tell you. Weeks 1–4

You’ll start at the lowest dose. Always. We don’t skip steps. In these first few weeks, your body is adjusting — you may notice some mild nausea or a different relationship with food. Most people describe it as suddenly being able to push the plate away. The constant background noise about snacks gets quieter. Some people lose weight quickly in this phase. Others don’t — and that’s okay. Your body is learning.

Months 2–3

This is when the real work shows up. We gradually increase your dose based on how you’re responding. Most clients see steady, encouraging weight loss during this phase. You’ll notice your portions are naturally smaller. Cravings are quieter. Foods that used to feel like obsessions don’t take up the same mental real estate anymore. Clothes start fitting differently.

Months 4 and beyond

This is the long game. Some clients are well on their way to their goal weight. Others are still working toward it. We adjust the plan as needed. We celebrate the wins. We troubleshoot the plateaus. And here’s the part I want you to internalize: the people who succeed long-term are the ones who use this time to build the habits that will carry them when they eventually taper down. Walking. Cleaner eating. Better sleep. The medication makes those habits possible. Your effort makes them permanent.

One of our clients lost over 100 pounds. She no longer needs her CPAP machine. Another client is down nearly 60 pounds in four months and tells us he has more energy than he’s had in years. These aren’t miracles. These are the predictable result of a quality medication, a thoughtful plan, and a person who decided to show up for themselves.

Now let’s talk about quality — because not all medications are created equal

Here’s where I have to be honest with you, because being honest is the only way I know how to run this business.

You’ve probably seen the ads. Cheap online weight loss medication. Telehealth programs that promise to ship something to your door for a fraction of what we charge. And I’m not here to bash anyone — if cost is your only consideration, you’ll have plenty of options.

But here’s what I want you to know about Fortitude’s medications: ours are compounded by a high-quality, licensed compounding pharmacy that we have personally vetted. We know the source. We know the formulation. We know the consistency you get in vial number one is the same consistency you’ll get in vial number twelve. That sounds like a small thing. It is not a small thing.

In a compounded medication market, quality varies dramatically. Some sources cut corners. Some use less pure active ingredients. Some have inconsistent dosing from batch to batch. When you’re injecting something into your body every week for months, that consistency is not negotiable — and I will not put my clients on something I wouldn’t put my own family on.

So yes, we are not the cheapest option in the DFW Metroplex. We were never trying to be. What we offer is medication-grade quality, true medical oversight from a board- certified physician, and a team that knows your name and your story. If price is your only metric, I genuinely encourage you to shop around — I’ve told clients that to their faces. But if you want the highest quality medical weight loss experience available, sourced and supervised the way we’d want it for ourselves, that’s what we do.

That’s the difference. And for the people who choose us, it’s a difference they feel.

Is medical weight loss right for you?

Maybe. Maybe not. The honest answer depends on a lot of factors — your health history, your goals, what you’ve tried before, where you are in your life right now.

What I can tell you is that the people who tend to do best in our program share a few things in common. They’re ready. They’re willing to pair the medication with reasonable lifestyle effort. And they want a partnership — a team that walks the journey with them

— not a faceless website that ships them a vial and disappears.

If that sounds like you, come in for a free consultation. There’s no pressure. No obligation. Just a conversation about whether this is the right path forward, and if it is, what it would look like for you specifically.

Because here’s the truth I’ve learned watching hundreds of people walk this road: the goal was never just the number on the scale. The goal was the energy. The confidence. The way it feels to take the stairs without thinking about it. The way it feels to look in the mirror and recognize yourself again.

That version of you is reachable. And there’s no shame in getting a little expert help to find her.
